R&D and Innovation Activities

Since its incorporation in 2011, the R & D and Innovative actions that Strategic Minerals Spain have developed have been closely related to sustainability and the circular economy, and have been mainly focused on:

✔ The incorporation of specialized personnel in R&D and Innovative tasks to carry out the projects of the company:

  • Achievement of 2 Torres Quevedo contracts from the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain, for the hiring of PhD’s in private companies (2012, 2018).
  • One Industrial PhD student thanks to a grant from the Oviedo City Council, to carry out PhD in private companies (2019).

✔ The execution of R&D and Innovative tasks through:

  • A wide number of internal projects privately funded, in collaboration with various research centers and national universities (University of Salamanca, Polytechnic University of Catalunya, National Center for Metallurgical Research - CSIC, among others).
  • National projects in competitive public calls: "Development of technologies to obtain tin, niobium and tantalum from mining waste (ESTANNIO)" (RTC-2017-6629-5), financed by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness and the State Research Agency (AEI) in the context of the call Retos-Colaboración of the State Program for Research, Development and Innovation Oriented to the Challenges of Society, within the framework of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2013-2016. Strategic Minerals Spain leads an outstanding scientific-technological consortium whose objective is the revaluation of the waste from the Penouta mine (Galicia, Spain) as an alternative source of Nb, Ta and Sn, developing a novel technology on a pilot scale for the recovery of these metals, through a combination of pyro and hydrometallurgical techniques.
  • European projects: Strategic Minerals Spain is part of the European project H2020 TARANTULA, which seeks to recover critical raw materials from mining waste, using environmentally friendly, sustainable and low-cost metallurgical processes. This project is funded by the Horizon 2020 program of the European Commission (Grant agreement ID: 821159). https://h2020-tarantula.eu/.

✔ The result of these actions is the extensive scientific production of Strategic Minerals Spain, highlighting:

✔ All of the above has contributed to be awarded as Innovative SME: The General Directorate for Innovation and Competitiveness of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness has awarded the “Innovative small and medium-sized company (SME)” recognition to Strategic Minerals Spain. This recognition rewards the quality and innovative character of the services and activities offered by the company.

This award was created and regulated by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, by virtue of Order ECC / 1087/2015 of June 5, in order to promote R&D and Innovative actions in Spain to distinguish SMEs that have accredited to be innovative companies.

In August 2020, this award was renewed for three more years.
